Upwelling Festival
Info type: Event, Portland, Victoria, Australia
When: 30/10/2010
On the last Saturday in October, the Portland Foreshore will come alive and 'well up' with excitement for the second year of our new festival concept - celebrating the unique features of our beautiful coastal town. The Portland Tourist Association, in partnership with the Glenelg Shire Council, have reinvigorated and revitalised the festival with a vision based on the Bonney Upwelling. This epic natural phenomenon occurs off the coast of Portland when the spring winds shift to the south-east, driving a change in ocean currents that powers a seven month feeding frenzy (November to May) of tuna, crayfish, giant crabs, squid, fish, seabirds, krill and blue whales. An incredibly rich ecological food web, the Upwelling is at its greatest off the coast of Portland and is the cornerstone of our lucrative local fishing and tourism industry. Blue whales are the signature species of the Upwelling and Portland is the only land-based blue whale watching area in Australia. . The Portland Upwelling Festival will run for one day only and be free for everyone to attend. This allows all Portland residents to participate in this unique local celebration.
